Doctors African nation of Malawi are killed by rioters who think they are vampires

Via The Daily Mail:
Doctors Malawi were beaten for wearing stethoscopes by vigilantes who
believe they are vampires using the instruments to suck blood.
Doctors have also stolen and their vehicles were smashed, while ambulances
were attacked that patients were taken to hospital, a doctor and # 8217;
said association.
The Malawi Doctors Company reported a case of & # 8216; mass hysteria
sweeping the south of the country has led thousands of people to believe
that there are vampires in their midst.

Nine people were beaten to death after being accused of being a vampire,
while 124 were arrested for executing attacks.
In a statement, the company president Dr. Amos Salimanda Nyaka said: & #
8216; We are troubled by reports of banditry which resulted in some health
workers were attacked for wearing a stethoscope.
& # 8216; Some have had unfortunate consequences of having their vehicles
smashed, and others with their property removed them to be suspected of
being bloodsuckers, and or further nonexistent suckers.
& # 8216; Ambulances were also attacked while being used to transport
patients or hospital.
& # 8216; This is despicable and we all condemn these acts and any similar
barbarism against innocent unreservedly and in the strongest possible
language.
& # 8216 ;. No health worker can suck blood with a stethoscope

Dr. Nyaka added that there & # 8216; no evidence vampires are real, and
instead blamed the situation on & # 8216; Shared Delusion Disorder & #
8217;.
He said: & # 8216; This is when a dominant individual who is abused and
those who believe may have followed him and internalize its illusions.
shared illusion is generally limited to a locality.
& # 8216; Given the magnitude of the problem in that it affects many
districts and the willingness of many Malawians to internalize those
beliefs that presentation would be that of Mass Hysteria.
& # 8216; It is the view of the Company considered that these bloodsuckers
do not exist. This is purely Mass Hysteria & # 8217.
The attacks began in mid-September, but the alarm has increased in recent
weeks, they spread in Blantyre, the second largest city in the country.
Malawi is one of the world's poorest countries, and belief in witchcraft is
widespread.

Police arrested 124 people Friday last week after two men were beaten to
death in Blantyre, accused of trying to get human blood for voodoo rituals.
& # 8216; One person was burned and another stoned to death by angry mobs
in the incidents on Thursday to be suspected of being bloodsuckers,
spokesman of Ramsy Mushani police say.
The latest killings occurred outside Blantyre, the country's commercial
capital, where angry crowds clashed with police and blocked main roads in
protest against the alleged vampire threat.
The police chief of the country said that 124 people had been arrested in a
& # 8216; coordinated operation & # 8217;.
